NATIVE – Genèse
Before its recording in New York, NATIVE was born out of an identity quest across the Americas. In French Guiana, Nicolas Lossen experienced a pivotal residency with the Kali’na community of Awala-Yalimapo, guided by Elvis Tokkaand his group Ayawandé, as well as the Robineau family. This immersion opened a deep dialogue with a still-living Indigenous memory.
The journey expanded through travels in Colombia, Canada, Chicago, and Martinique, combining personal research, artistic encounters, and anthropological explorations. Each step nourished the musical writing, giving rise to a project that goes beyond the album itself: a sensitive reflection on roots, identity, and cultural transmission.
Avant son enregistrement à New York, NATIVE est né d’une quête identitaire menée à travers les Amériques. En Guyane française, Nicolas Lossen a vécu une résidence marquante auprès de la communauté Kali’na d’Awala-Yalimapo, guidé par Elvis Tokka et son groupe Ayawandé, ainsi que la famille Robineau. Cette immersion a ouvert un dialogue profond avec une mémoire autochtone encore vivante.
Ce chemin s’est enrichi de voyages en Colombie, au Canada, à Chicago et en Martinique, mêlant recherche personnelle, rencontres artistiques et explorations anthropologiques. Chaque étape a nourri l’écriture musicale, donnant naissance à un projet qui dépasse l’album : une réflexion sensible sur les racines, l’identité et la transmission.

Recorded in New York with renowned jazz musicians, this album delivers uncompromising contemporary jazz, where memory and modernity intertwine to tell another chapter of the Americas’ history.
Deuxième volet d’un triptyque après Pié Coco’a, Native rend hommage aux Premières Nations des Amériques. Enregistré à New York avec des musiciens de jazz de renom, cet album propose un jazz contemporain sans concessions, où mémoire et modernité se rencontrent pour raconter un autre pan de l’histoire des Amériques.
